Hamot for Women and Penn State Behrend present: BREASTIVAL™/TESTIVAL

Erie, PA – On March, 30th, the third annual BREASTIVAL™ and second annual TESTIVAL will be held on the campus of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The program has been made possible by a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Community Partnership Grant and the support of the Center for Breast Health, Penn State Behrend and Hamot for Women. The goal of the event is to raise awareness about the importance of practicing good health habits among young women and men. Breast cancer remains the most feared disease of all women in the United States. There are many myths in our society that have perpetuated this fear. Testicular cancer, while not as publicized as other cancers, usually strikes young adult males. The day’s events will provides students with facts about both of these cancers, empower them with information, answer their questions, and do it all in a fun and entertaining way!

BREASTIVAL™ is a program that was developed and trademarked by Johns Hopkins University, assisted by the Alpha Kappa Delta Phi sorority, in an effort to provide breast health care education in a relaxed, fun environment. Hamot organizers have expanded the program to include a focus on testicular cancer, which is why the local event is known as a TESTIVAL as well.

How does it work?

Each participant will receive a “passport” with 19 boxes representing the education “stops” that must be visited. Workers at the education booths will ask questions about breast and/or testicular cancer. Once the questions at a given station have been answered correctly, the person receives a stamp on their passport. A completed passport gets them a t-shirt, while supplies last.

Along the way, there will be several tables with educational information about performing self exams as well as other health and wellness information. In addition, several door (booby) prizes will be given away through a chance auction. Games are also part of the fun. Participants are asked to take a break from their studies to play some games like, “Pink” Pong, The Ta-Ta Toss, Guess the M&Ms in the Bra and Sliding Shorts and Can You Feel The Lumps??
